The Moving Clickers Inc. "The dark is light enough" Sir Samuel Moggs 1759 (Patron of the Moving Clickers)
The Moving Clickers Inc is Victoria's oldest existing Film Society, founded in October 1957 by a group who owned land at Moggs Creek. Hence, the Moving Clickers is often referred to simply as 'Moggs'. The photo shows Paddy and Alex Stitt. Alex is president of the Moving Clickers. He and Paddy are well known graphic designers - they are better known as ASAP. Alex Stitt and Partners
CITY SCREENINGS. Click here for latest screenings We have six regular screenings per year - four regular screenings at our own venue, and two outings at mainstream cinemas. In recent years we have showcased the short films of young directors, one of whom recently won an Academy Award. MOGGS FILM WEEKEND An annual residential Film Weekend has been held in the Lorne Cinema each year since 1968. Attendances of around 100 people (and often a lot more) have been achieved. Themes are often chosen for these weekends and have included a Road Movie Weekend and a Thriller Weekend. A free cocktail party Saturday night, and free barbecue and boule event at Moggs Creek helps make a memorable weekend. THE MOVING CLICKERS KICKALONG AWARD Each year a young Film Maker at the VCA Film School is awarded a Kick-a-Long cash award to help with post production costs - extra film print, entry fees to Film Festivals in Australia and overseas, producing promotional material or any one of a dozen other needs. From time to time, we also invite young Directors to show their films. One of these, Adam Elliot, secured SBS funding for a claymation series - which subsequently won the Academy Award for Best Animated Film in 2004 against Pixar and Disney. Philip Donnellan was one of only two Australian entrants at Cannes Film Festival in 2001: Jamie Browne secured a contract to develop his footy film 'One Week at a Time' into a TV series He's also getting film offers from Hollywood! Our first Kickalong Award winner, David Rittey had his film accepted into the prestigious Edinburgh Film Festival. David's short film titled 'Closer' also competed at Cannes. MOGGS OWN FILMS In the early years, members made films for fun. Each month a group would write and film an episode of a serial, and leave the hero/heroine in dire straits - to be rescued by the next group making the following episode. The titles of these films reflected what was happening in mainstream cinema at the time - little seen classics such as: On the Beach - filmed on Eastern Beach at Moggs Creek. A continuity problem has hampered the film's completion - many of the children in the cast are now adults with their own children. The Mild One - directed by Fred Schepisi and starring animator Alex Stitt riding a pushbike. Democratic Freedom - a tribute to Eisenstein The Sign of the Seal — this film made Ingmar Bergman ... jealous (we think) THE MOVING CLICKERS CREATIVE LEGACY From past and present members we can lay claim to: an international film director; a film music composer; an internationally applauded animator; a tantrum of advertising film directors and producers, a verbosity of commercial/advertising writers; a scribble of art directors and graphic designers and a blur of photographers. Several Moving Clickers past members have attained notable success: Fred Schepisi has around a dozen mainstream movies to his credit. Our interim President Alex Stitt created 'Norm' for the Life Be in It Campaign and the Moving Clickers logo. He has also written, directed and produced two full length animated films, Grendel, Grendel Grendel, a re-working of the Beowulf myth, and Abracadabra, concerning the fate of the children after being led away by the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Bruce Smeaton wrote the music for Picnic at Hanging Rock and has worked on many local and international movies. The late Brian Brandt ruled the commercial photography world for over 40 years. He was acknowledged as arguably Australia's finest food photographer and party-giver. The Logie Award took form in the studio of the late Brian Broberg - he bemoaned never being asked to refine it. He also designed the masthead for Australia's first national newspaper, The Australian. A LITTLE MOGGS NONSENSE NOW AND THEN.... The Moving Clickers is possibly the only Australian film society to have its own patron, Sir Samuel Moggs (partnered by his lovely wife, Dame Minnie). According to Moggs legend, Sir Sam sailed his boat, the S'arcy Sue, up Moggs Creek and established a colony in 1759, 29 years before the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay.......Any devout Moggsonian member knows this to be the truth. At each film weekend we screen our own 'opener' of Sir Samuel Moggs looking disdainfully at the audience.
For many years the Moggs religiously raised a statue to Sir Sam on the Great Ocean Road at Moggs Creek - and vandals religiously removed every statue. Eventually, a few stories surfaced in the newspapers asking, "Who is Sir Samuel Moggs? His spirit is to be found at the Moving Clickers Lorne Film Weekend. THE MOVING CLICKERS CHARTER If the Moving Clickers has an aim, it is the enjoyment of worthwhile movies. Out motto "The dark is light enough" sums up our philosophy - Moggs members just like being kept in the dark.
